This book describes the design and characterisation of interface circuits for the dirct connection of sensors with a time-based output signal to a microcontroller.

The topics analysed are (a) the performance of microcontrollers in timing signals, (b) the susceptibility of IC quasi-digital sensors to supply voltage changes and (c) the performanceof direct modulating sensor-to-microcontroller interfaces based on measuring the charging/discharging time of na RC circuit.

The authors analyse the features and limitations of these interface circuits, and offer design rules and guidelines for improving their performance.

This book interestes designers of microcontrollers and IC sensors, which can apply the theoretical models developed herein to predict and reduce the effects of power supply interference. It also interests electronic circuit designers, which can apply the test circuits, measurement methods and design rules to their own designs. Finally, the book being the result of doctoral thesis, it may inspire other researchers to engage in gaining further insight in some of the topics considered, and help them in learning a systematic approach to hypothesis formulation and testing

About the authors;

> Ferran Reverterreceived the Beng degree in Industrial Electronic Engineering from the University of Girona (UdG), Girona, Spain, The Meng degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Barcelona (UB), Barcelona, Spain, and the PhD degree in Electronic Engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, in 1998, 2001, and 2004 respectively. Since September 2001, he has been with the Castelldefels School of Technology (EPSC), Castelldefels (Barcelona), which belongs to the UPC, where he is na assistante lecturer in Analogue Electronics and Digital Systems. His research interestes are in field of electronic instrumentation and direct sensor-to-microcontrolles interface circuits.

>Ramon Pallàs-Areny received the Ingeniero Industrial and Doctor Ingeniero Industrial degrees from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, Spain, in 1975 and 1982, respectively. He is a Professor of Electronic Engineering at the same University, and teaches courses in medical and electronic Engineering at the same Univertsity, and teaches courses in medical and electronic instrumentation at the Castelldefels School of Technology (EPSC) of the UPC, where he leads the Instrumentation, Sensors and Interfaces (ISI) Group (isi.info@upc.edu). In 1989 and 1990 he was a visiting Fullbright Scholar and, in 1997 and 1998 he was na Honorary Fellow at the University of Wiscounsin, Madison. In 2001 he was nominated Professor Honoris Causa by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania). His research includes instrumentation methods and sensors based on electrical impedance measurements, sensor interfaces, noninvasive physiological measurements and electromagnetic compability in electronic systems. He is the author of six books and the leading author of other five books on instrmentation in Spanish and Catalan. He is also coauthor (with John G. Webster) of Sensors and Signal Conditioning, 2nd ed. (New York: Wiley, 2001), and Analog Signal Processing (New york: Wiley, 1999).
